The design goal was to envision a new layout for Marconia, focusing on a number of peculiarities encapsulated in four key points:
• Interconnection between spaces
• Inclusiveness
• Unified and integrated green system
• Flexibility, interchangeability and adaptability to future scenarios.
The vast project area is expected, gradually over the years, to be able of accommodating renewed focal points capable of becoming integrated and interconnected multifunctional containers. Programmatic containers able to also respond to two further needs related to the wellbeing of the community, i.e. the aggregation of the social structure and increased tourism and hospitality attractiveness.
The new centralities, with functions and plans in step with the times, will have to be served by an increasingly integrated system of bicycle lanes and green parking spaces, moreover, the carriageway will have to be reorganised, allowing cars to quickly access the green parking areas built on the edges of the centre and serving the hub of the city with smart mobility systems (sharing mobility).
INTERVENTION 1: VIALE ONTARIO REDEVELOPMENT
The redevelopment project of the boulevard is premised on the reorganization of its cross section. The central traffic island will remain almost unchanged, preserving the lawn and the existing tree and shrub species, interrupted in some places only by level crosswalks. The rest will be extensively renovated. The high width of the current boulevard, in fact, makes its reorganization possible. If today 67 percent of the total section of the avenue is paved and used for driveway traffic or parking; in the future vision this percentage will drop to only 28 percent. On the one hand, there will be more green areas (41.5 percent versus the current 17 percent) and more bicycle paths (today shared with cars or pedestrians); on the other hand, there will be fewer cars.
INTERVENTION 2: NEW INCLUSIVE PARK
The programmatic choice is to exploit the existing green container while respecting its environmental peculiarities and inserting a series of circular thematic areas organised around a continuous, sinuous and inclusive path open indiscriminately to all without distinction that will cross the park from one end to the other. The inclusive park is an environment that welcomes all, that includes. The thematic areas and the connecting path have been adapted to the current conformation of the park and villa areas, trying to preserve the naturalistic aspects present as much as possible. Great care has been taken to ensure that new interventions do not compromise this aspect, either during construction or when completed.
INTERVENTION 3: COMPLETE RENOVATION OF PIAZZA BOLOGNA
The project entails the total closure of the perimeter to traffic, the levelling of the ground, through the cancellation of elevation changes and the elimination of architectural barriers, and the creation of a fluid space that will develop around two elements: paths and thematic islands created on the ground with material variations, and a modern pergola. The latter, with differing heights, will ideally delimit a multifunctional space, capable of changing skin at different moments of day and evening. The sinuous and organic shape of the pergola and the paths underneath will allow the creation of a fluid space, open and accessible anywhere and by anyone since it is all on one level. The new square will accommodate spaces that function differently during the day, in the afternoon and at night. The multifunctional space can be described as a true integration of different functions at different times in the same place. Versatility in urban spaces can contribute to vitality and social growth. The space will address different community actors, from families to young people, from local cultural associations to entrepreneurs and activists, opening up opportunities for exchanges of ideas, knowledge and experience. The new square will also include green areas that can be enjoyed even during the hottest hours of the day, and water features that can promote active cooling.
